Excerpt 5 Disorder at the Bionille prison
Not in the least concerned that the prison break would be added to bioterrorism in the list of charges pressed against him, Ambius Slothin looked for a way out. It wasn’t an easy feat to accomplish in the darkness, yet he knew what direction he needed to head in. He crawled towards the fire escape just as the elevator’s doors slid open and Tara Gossip and her cameraman walked into the battlefield. Slothin rushed to the lift and, thanking Tara, who stopped in confusion, he flew inside the elevator before the doors closed again. On the ground floor he didn’t find any guards – they had been neutralised beforehand by the mysterious ninja. Slothin slipped downhill into the thickness of reeds in the nick of time. The police and fire-fighters rushed in through the front entrance, no longer obstructed by the gates.
Meanwhile, Tara lit her helmet lamp and told her assistant to start shooting.
‘We are now broadcasting live from Choppinsk where an unprecedented incident has occurred. We are in the epicentre which is Bionille, the main Bionian prison, at the concert hall where, as you just witnessed, Despoena’s concert has been interrupted by an armed assault.’
Tara switched on her torch and looked around. ‘Now, as you can see, instead of the show there is a crashed helicopter over here, and, maybe you can hear the shooting. The combat continues. The timing for our visit is not perfect, yet we’ll try to interview someone participating to find out what’s going on.’
She turned around.
‘Just look at how brilliantly this warrior fights!’ exclaimed Tara, catching Andrei, who by this time had despatched over a dozen assassins, with the cone of her torch’s light. He threw a shuriken that hit and extinguished Tara’s torch. There wasn’t any more time left to deal with the killers, as his wristwatch set off vibrations, indicating the arrival of the authorities.
I can survive anything but not that chewing gum, he thought.
Andrei spotted Welka kneeling over William’s body and cursed that the windows were in the opposite direction. As he ran for escape, the broken ceiling illuminated with the light coming from the police helicopters. Andrei smashed through the glass, jumping out the window, and then slipped down the prison wall towards the river.

Grigory (a.k.a Grisha) Ryzhakov grew up in the Siberian Far East, bathing in the icy waters of Seas of Okhotsk and Japan and playing hide-and-seek in the snowdrifts that carpeted his native Sakhalin Island. He later travelled thousands of miles to vibrant London, on the way collecting his MSc degree in biochemistry at Moscow State and PhD in molecular biology at Cambridge University. Meanwhile, Grigory has been ceaselessly creating poems, songs and prose until eventually he wrote his debut novel “Mr Right & Mr Wrong”. “Usher Syndrome” was his first published story, also adapted for the stage and performed at London’s Barons Court Theatre in 2010.
